My old neighbor was Sikh and it is against their religion to cut their hair, and they roll their hair up. also they normally live in a very sandy area, so the most simple answer is that the turban is used to keep their hair from getting to dirty. This is what my neighbor told me.

Sikhs wear a turban because it is hwo they crown themselves as the Singhs and Jaurs who sit on the throne of commitment in their own higher consciousness. The projective identity in men and women alike conveys roylaty, grace and uniqueness. The turban doesn;t represent anything but complete commitment. When they choose to stand out by tying their turban, they stand fearlessly as one single person standing out from 6 billion people. For them, it is a most outstanding act.

The turbin you are referring to is worn by those males that are followers of Muhammad learning from the Quran.
The teaching impells the male followers to grow their hair and never, ever cut it, since it is a gift from Allah. In addition it is not to be washed.
Therefore, the turban helps to keep the hair all in one place, suffocates the smell, and keeps the lice in the nest.
In addition it conceals weapons, should the Muslim have to follow his relgious doctorines and murder an infidel for any reason at all.
