I can't recommend either of them, they are both of nasties, and are both poor quality foods.
All I can do is offer my article and hope you change your mind.
Nothing you find at a grocery store is going to be a good food. High quality foods can be found at large pet store chains, or online. A couple of foods I like are Nutro Natural, Innova, and Cannidae.
There are other high quality dog foods. Here's how to spot them:
A high quality food will have little or no fillers such as corn, wheat or soy. These aren't very digestable for dogs, and are common food related allergens. Since you were seeing corn meal in the first few ingredients, those are not high quality foods. Foods list ingredients by content, with the ingredient it contains most of at the top.
A high quality food will not contain BHT, BHA or Ethoxyquin, these are all chemical preservatives that have been linked to cancer.
A high quality food will not contain by-products of any kind. Meat meals are ok as long as the source of the meat is listed, such as Chicken Meal.
A high quality diet should have meat as at least the first ingredient., and be made from human grade ingredients. Foods that don't use human grade ingredients often get their ingredients from less than desirable sources, such as meat from animals that were diseased, or euthanized.
There is another diet option other than dog food. Some people choose to feed a raw diet. This involves feeding the dog raw meaty bones and organ meat. However it is not as simple as throwing a couple chicken bones in a bowl everyday. If you wish to feed this type of diet, do lots and lots of research first. Switching to this diet without knowing what your doing can lead to nutritional problems for your dog. I'll give you some links as a starting point in research if you are interested in this type of diet.

If you want a great food for your dog, I would recommend that you consider any of these foods over Science Diet or Purina One.
Wellness
Innova
Canidae
Merrick
California Natural

I realize you were looking for the better of the two foods, BUT neither one are good. So many people are fooled by the science diet logo because the vet RECOMMENDS it......... Well just because the vet recommends this dog food is because they get a 40 percent PROFIT on what they sell to the people that think the vet knows best. The vet does know best when it comes to treating animals with illnesses, BUT they are NOT pet nutritionists, THEY ARE pet DOCTORS.
Vets do not want you to feed your dog healthy foods because if people fed the healthy foods then there would be less sick pets and they would loose money, this is sad, but it is TRUE.
Purina one, NO it is the same as science diet, full of nothing but junk and fillers. Sure it is going to state meat by-products on the label, but if you call chopped up road kill diseased euthanized livestock and chicken beaks and feathers a good source of meat then go ahead and feed dog food that will eventually cause your pet cancer, same with science diet.
The best foods to consider feeding your pet that has nothing but all natural ingrediants in it is innova, canidae, solid gold, wellness, california natural. These are a few, but there is many more good dog foods, but the two you listed are honestly nothing but junk.

Neither of them. They're both horridly crappy foods that contain corn as one of the first five ingredients - which is not good for dogs and one of the highest sources for food allergies in dogs.
When searching for a good food, I would make the suggestions for Solid Gold, Canidae, Innova, Merrick, Chicken Soup, Wellness, Natural Balance, etc. because they are high-quality foods that take the dog's actual nutritional needs into account far better than any food that you can find in a grocery store - i.e. Iams, Eukanuba, Science Diet, & Purina. Also, vets who recommend Science Diet, Iams, etc. tend to get money for selling these products or discounts, etc.
Merrick and Canidae both make all-life stages foods which are good for the dog's entire life. I'm personally favorable to Canidae, but it is based on the individuals' dog as far as taste and palitability.
Good luck with the new puppy and feel free to IM me if you have further questions. :)

Neither food is really all that great, but the lesser of two evils would be the Science Diet. Purina One does, in fact, tend to cause loose stools in dogs, and also, more of them, with a worse smell. Science diet, on the other hand, does not have these problems, but is made with an inferior quality meat product. Honestly, I would call your local vet and ask what he reccomends, and also ask the breeder what s/he feeds his/her animals.

Check for label ingredients carefully. If any corn products of any kind are listed, beware. Corn of any type in pet foods is toxic due to pesticide applications in the growing process. Stay away from preservatives, food colorings, etc. Royal Canine dog food is the best for all dogs. They have special selections for different breeds. You can only buy it at Petsmart/Petco or online.
Bottom Line: Always read the labels.

You should start out with Purina Puppy Chow first. That's what my breeder and vet recommend.

I have feed my dogs both and they both seem to be pretty healthy for my dogs. I feed them science diet and then switched their food to Purina one. They seem to like Purina better. Purina is less expensive.
