I heard someone say because they are scavengers. What's wrong with that?

It just seems like strange reasoning, but maybe there is a different reason.

I think a more appropriate reason would be that they are a magnificent creation of God that don't need to be eaten. They are sentient beings.

Well... Why?

Oh, O.K., gotcha.

Pick-and-choose Old Testament bible verses to suit whatever ideas you might have. Nothing new I guess.

Mickey hit it on the head here. It is because they are bottom feeders and eat waste products that meander down from other fish to the bottom of the sea or river. I'm a Seventh Day Adventist and I don't eat shell fish. It is right there in Leviticus for the reason of being unclean.

Well first of all they are scavengers like you said. If you go back in the Old Testament; God distinguished what foods we should eat and which one's we shouldn't. Now if you decide too; that's your choice, but some groups don't because it's an abomination to eat anything unclean. Isn't our body the temple of God as stated in 1Cor.3:18-19? We supposed to take care of our body and be in good health (3John 1:2).
Shrimp are made to eat the garbage under the sea floor; they carry diseases too. The pig is a scavenger too; it eats the slop on the earth and if you looked under a microscope of cooked ham; you will find worms in it. You really want tricinosis and diseases and things in your body?

** TEXTS THAT INVOLVE THE CLEAN AND UNCLEAN MEATS:
GEN.18:7-8; LEV.11; 20:25; DEUT.14; ISAIAH 66:17; EZEK.22:26; DAN.1:8; MATT.3:4; LUKE 24:41-43; ACTS 10:10-14; 1COR.3:16-17; 9:27; 2COR.6:17; AND REV.21:8.
----TO ME; IF THE CLEAN AND UNCLEAN MEATS WEREN'T VALID FOR TODAY; THEN WHY OH WHY WOULD THE LORD PLEAD WITH FLESH NOT TO EAT UNCLEAN MEAT--(ISAIAH 66:15-17). ALSO NOTICE DEUT.14:4 "SHALT NOT EAT ANY ABOMINABLE THING" AND REV.21:8 "...THE ABOMINABLE SHALL HAVE THEIR PART IN THE LAKE WHICH BURNETH WITH FIRE AND BRIMSTONE: WHICH IS THE SECOND DEATH."

If you are into eating waste material then do so. But just remember it like this, would you eat a fish that was subject to radio activity? So it goes with shrimp and shell fish they are bottom feeders the eat ANYTHING that lays on the bottom of the waters. Decaying flesh, fecal matter, etc. Do you think that that is transferred to their flesh?

i think its because they believe that shrimps (along with all other shellfish) eat waste products that sink to the bed of the ocean, and for this reason are considered contaminated, or "unclean". i believe they only eat fish with fins and scales. there could be more to it than this tho, cuz im not familiar with all their doctrine.

Leviticus condemns shrimp as unclean animals. See godhatesshrimp.com.

Lieviticus condemns the eating of shellfish, just as it condemns homosexuality. Good christians eat shellfish, but for some unknown reason, hate homosexuality.

In other words, most christians just pick and choose which parts of the bible god REALLY meant...

there is nothing wrong about shrimp, not even in the Bible. Do not listen to things that come from sects, these people love twisting the WORD of God, which is only one.
