I don't know if this is characteristic of fire departments in my area or if this is nationwide, however, I noticed that any fire station built around the 1960's has a loud annoying siren up in a tower or directly above the building. I have not heard the siren in about 15 years or so, however, I see them all over my area. What is the purpose of this siren?

The siren is used during the course of a tornado warning

Some are used for tornado warnings or other natural disasters (hurricanes, tsunami, etc) They are also used as civil defense warnings, in case we are ever attacked. Most towns of any size (10,000 or more) have these sirens (horns)

At least in my area (Long Island, NY); the Klaxxon's are used for alerting out actual fire calls (not ambulance calls)...they are also used to notify the area when it is 12:00 PM, and in times of civil defense.

During the days before pagers and cell phones the sirens were used to alert the volunteer firefighters that there was an emergency. They were also used for other warnings as well, tornado's, air raids (cold war days), nucleur attack warnings (cold war days), etc.
