I concur with Lane C. If you happen to have installed ME in a newer machine with at least 512M of memory (but ideally 1G or more), then go with XP. XP is much less lossy and will hang much fewer times. Home edition is fine, if you have been comfortable with ME. Install a registry cleaner -- a freebe like easycleaner is good enough -- and this will keep things running smoothly.

If you are not dissatisfied with ME, then it is meeting your needs. Then no need to line Mr. Gates' pockets.

If you have made it this long suffering through Windows ME you might want to think about buying a new computer instead of upgrading. Any PC (even the $299 Dell Deals) will scream in comparison to upgrading your old PC to Windows XP. As an added bonus these cheap OEM computers come with Windows XP included.

I would suggest going with XP home unless you suddenly have an urge to spend a lot more on hardware to run XP Media Center Edition.

to answer your question with one word : Windows Xp Pro but read what i have 2 tell u

about windows thing i must say i was kind of crazy of it 3 years ago
becuse i changed my windows every 3-4 days and went to linux chaning back to 98 ... upgrading to xp going to 2000 ... NT
every thing u can think of it
becuse i live in iran and i can download every thing i want without beeing afraid of copyright or anything else
if u come to iran u can see windows xp or any other software
every place u could imagine and the price is about 1/10$ and they beg u to buy it
( every one think crack version cant have the support buy i say dont worry about updating stuff u can change ur serial number and get the latest update )

ok i wanted to say i tried all of this and now i even installed windows vista RC1
all i have 2 tell u is they all are the same ... even if u have windows 95 u can do any thing which windows vista can do
not the Fantasy stuff but every necessary thing

if u are going to buy windows then dont buy vista becuse there are no driver support for now ... like if u want to install sata hard drive u cant becuse there is no driver for it so
wait for atleast 2 years...
and from my opinion dont waste ur money on something which u cant learn something new ( try linux insted) ... windows vista is just like windows xp but with no driver support and no hardware support and some games and some softwares cant be run becuse of Changing in Kernel code of the windows i give u seccond reason to not buy windows vista
becuse i heard some companys like IBM said that they wont support windows vista and instead of vista they will support linux like red hat or fedora core ...

if there were no hackers and no virus i will be at windows 98
( becuse they use less memory and less space ... windows vista needs atleast 15 gig hard drive space and 1 gig ram to work fine)

Good luck :)

Get a new PC and get yourself a decent OS like XP Professional, make sure the new system you get is Vista capable, then when you want to upgrade again you will be ready for it, Vista is a bit in its infancy yet, still not tried and tested... So i would wait a while to upgrade unless you get the free upgrade option with a new pc...

Ignore Man:

My advise, wait for Vista, however as a non XP user the change may take a while for you to get used to.

A trial period of VISTA can be downloaded:

http://www.microsoft.co.uk

Many pcs at the moment are not compatible with VISTA. hy not take you pc to a specilist shop and see if it will be able to run VISTA.

Better still by a new pc... many are cheap i.e Dell but remember you should expect the perform you pay for and a £300 pc is generally really bad, I invested in a £1,500 pc and it is always worth the money.

If you are keeping your current computer then XP Home Edition.
Your computer might not have the power for Media Centre.

Anyone of those should do the trick for the time being. They're much better than Windows Me and it'll probably be a while yet before Vista is proper settled in.
