Get some stuffed dog toys and baby blankets and a crate. Anytime you're not interacting with the dog, crate it with the blankets and stuffed animals. If it's a puppy and you have access to the mother, rub the blankets and toys on the mother then put them with him. The scent will be a huge comfort.

The above suggestions offer great advice. If the anxiety is severe, Prozac has been shown to be helpful. If the options already stated don't work, speak with your veterinarian to see if this is an option for your dog.

If you are sure he is missing his owner or family, you need to find him a surrogate playmate. Maybe your next door neighbor has a dog for him to play with in your absence, or you could adopt from your local shelter. Another useful trick is to leave some of your old clothes, or shoes in the area where he generally sleeps, and or plays. Helps if they are kind've dirty, and have plenty of your smell on them---
