You are not understanding the relationship between dementia and Alzheimer's.
Alzheimer's is a TYPE of dementia. There are other types. A person can have more than one type of dementia at a time.
So, everyone who has Alzheimer's has dementia.
Not everyone who has dementia has Alzheimer's (or will get it).

No it does NOT lead to Alzhiemers. It is Alzheimers which causes dementia. But you can have dementia without getting alzheimers.
There are many causes of dementia, even a stroke can bring on dementia.
As for Joey K' comment about him being a psychologist and thinks he "know all" - especially the bit about "dementia is a symptom of several different diagnoses of the gerontological population." Well, I have news for you! I have cared for someone who definitely was diagnosed with Alzheimers who is less than 45 years old (and also have seen cases of people under 60 getting it) So, before getting on your high horse and think you got your degree.... get some life experience and work in the field a bit more before telling things you don't know to us who is out there and is seeing what is happening.

Dementia is a general term in the DSM for the symptoms of forgetfulness, disorientation, etc. If someone has alzheimers, it's actually classified in the DSM and Dementia, alzheimer's type, which indicates the origin of the symptoms. Dementia can occur because of a variety of illnesses, addictions, etc. In other words, all alzhemer's patients have dementia, but not all dementia patients have alzheimers. Alzhiemers can be treated with medications like Namenda and Aricept, which are not a cure, but slow the progression of the disease.

I believe it does. My wonderful Mother was always a bit of a forgetful person. Then she was actually diagnosed with dementia after many years. And this did lead to alzheimers. It took a total of 10 years to go from a forgetful person to almost full blown alzheimers. But, she developed breast cancer then also, and when she had her chemo, my siblings and I believe it brought it on very fast. She has not been able to left alone for about 2 years now. Too dangerous. But she is at the point now where she knows us, but doesn't really understand that we are her children. But you know what? She is still my Mother and she has the most gentle soul I have ever met! Even still, she is the most kind, sweet person! She will always be my Mother and I will always love her.

It's possible to have dementia without it leading to Alzheimer's...which, of course, also creates a kind of dementia. There are a few different types of dementia, though, and not all people who have it get Alzheimer's.

no. dementia and alzheimers are two different disorders with some similar characteristics. alzheimers is a disease that eventually leads to death, while dementia can be a transitory disorder caused by a variety of disease processes going on in the body. dementia is not a normal part of aging, but a symptom that something else is wrong in the body.

No. Dementia is actually a symptom of Alzheimer's not a cause...There are many causes for dementia, age, (loss of brain cells through cell breakdown), drugs, (look at Ozzie Osborne), certain diseases of the brain, i.e. some cancers, infections that are not caught soon, some birth related illnesses, (some cerebral palsy's), environment can cause some types of dementia. Look up Dementia, I'm sure you will find many web sites...Also while you are at it, look up symptoms of Alzheimer's if you have a family member that you are worried about......Hope this helps................

Your question must be in reverse. Alzheimers causes dementia and not the other way around. Alzheimers is the degeneration that occcurs in the brain which in turn leads to detoriation in function (dementia).
