Hot apple cider! Kids LOVE pushing cloves into an orange, so start with that -- take whole cloves and press them into a fresh orange or tangerine. (Don't use more than 10-12 cloves or the resulting drink will be bitter.) I also pierce the orange several times with a thin, sharp knife to help its flavor enter the cider.

Place the clove-studded orange and a stick of cinnamon into a 2-quart (2L) saucepan, then pour in apple cider (or apple juice). Heat slowly over low until the cider is the temperature of hot tea/coffee/cocoa. The longer you leave it, the better it tastes, and it makes the whole HOUSE smell of spiced apples and oranges.

Adults, I have found, enjoy this with a splash of rum or brandy (and orange liqueur) in the bottom of the mug before pouring over the hot apple cider, but that's up to your adult guests.

This is also great with gingerbread cookies!

Hot Cranberry Drink

Ingredients

200g cranberries
200 ml orange juice
3 teaspoons sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/8 teaspoon ginger

Put the cranberries in a saucepan with the orange juice and bring to the boil. Simmer until the skins of the cranberries split and then mash hard to try to extract as much cranberry juice as possible. Pour into a meal sieve and press the cranberries hard to get as much juice through as possible . Return the juice to the saucepan and add the sugar and spices. Taste to see if it is sweet enough and serve immediately.

This recipe makes just one serving. The cranberries could be swapped for 200ml cranberry juice.

Kids always love homemade punch. Just get a few cans of frozen juice(mostly citrus, but other kinds are fine), and mix with some ginger ale and/or sprite. You can add sherbert too, or leave it as is. Make as much or as little as you want.

Take a litre of red Koolaid and add 2 cups orange juice and grenadine syrup. Garnish with umbrellas and maraschino cherries. As a punch, serve with oranges and limes floating in. Lemon is too sour at that age.

You can use two cups of club soda instead if they don't like orange juice.
