I've had a 'cold' hit me Sunday (but started a few days sooner, slowly) and got painful throat, then stuffy nose, then coughing, and they seem under control, but they don't quit! And today, when I coughed, I hacked up phlem that I wiped out (trying to remove germs) and the tissue came out YELLOW! Is it yellow or green that they say that is something to see Dr about? Some people think I might have an infection now. Can any steer me in the right direction? My husband says I'll get over it. Dr. office doesn't open til Monday.

No, I don't smoke. And I I've been taking Sudafed then when cough got bad, the pharmacy told me I needed Clartin to dry me out for the nasal drip, had two pills so far (one a day) but then is when I started to notice yellow stuff. btw, my urine smells odd, but looks normal.

I know this is horrible but its all in the consistency. If it has a creamy, pus-like consistency then this points towards a chest infection. See a doctor about it if you're worried.

Yellow is actually better than green because green is a sign that you have an infection. Of course, clear is preferable! Also, because you are able to able to cough up phlem, this is a good sign. When you can't cough it up, is when chest colds and pneumonia develop. To help yourself along, drink lots of water and get rest. If you don't feel better in a few days, or your cold gets worse, go to a doctor.

Bad or good is irrelevant.
Its not from your lungs, its called post nasel drip. You have a sinus infection and it is running down the back of your throat. This results in coughing and the ejection of phlem from your lungs. If you have the infection and cough long enough your phlem will be bloody. Till then try some Robitusin.

Yellow phlem is symptom of sinus drainage...Green phlem is sign of infection...Take over the counter guaifenensin, cough syrup, it will stop cough and break up congestion...If you are not better by Monday go to the doctor because drainage and bacteria from throat and nose can go into your bronchial tract and your lungs giving you bronchitis and/or pneumonia....Hope this helps......

I've had the same thing on occasion. Sounds like you do have a secondary bacterial infection. Yeah it is likely that you will get over it eventually on your own, but if you still have this going on on Monday I would get in to the Dr. and let him/her have a look. Not an ER situation so don't worry too much.
