Chicken soup is good for you when you are sick canned or not. They do sell soups with less sodium and that have more natural ingredients but they are more expensive than say Campbells.

Overall, I'd say canned soups are about a 4/10 on the health scale: not awful, but not what you want to be eating if you're trying to get well.

Specifically, some canned soups have partially-hydrogenated oils (trans fats) which are unhealthy. Most soups have an oddly high sodium content that you don't get with fresh soups. It's best to read and understand the ingredients and ignore any health claims on the label.

Generally, the good thing about eating soup when your sick is that your body expends much less energy digesting it than more solid foods. Thus, it can use more resources fighting the infection.

But it's best to stick with fresh soups (try Whole Foods, a health food store, or the healthy vegetable soups (chicken broth or soy based) from most any Chinese Restaurant.

Overall the recipe for a speedy recovery from a common illness is:
1. Keep meals simple (i.e. fresh soups)
2. Sleep as much as possible (throw normal worries about sleeping too much out the window)
3. Orange juice (not just Vitamin C pills; wheatgrass juice is also good)
4. Expend as little energy as possible (i.e. physical activity, stress).
5. Avoid OTC medicines, which only treat symptoms.

Most canned soup has about 80% of your recommended daily allotment of sodium per can. That's awful! Progresso's reduced sodium soup still has 40% of your RDA.

That being said, soup makes you feel better when you're sick. It's hot and easy to eat. It opens up your sinuses and makes your throat feel good.

In general, canned soups are bad for you regardless because of the high sodium levels.

Kat is right...canned soup has tons of salt which over time will cause high blood pressure, hypertension and worse. We make home made soup, and it is awsome. Like chicken soup...you can find your own combination of spices and by using chicken thighs the bones will give you an awsome flavor.

Put water in a pot, season it with garlic, chicken bullions. Let it heat a little. Then put in the pease, the carrots, and the macaroni and shell noodles. Once everythings cooked totally cooked, then its ready to serve. I'd call it the ghetto version of chicken noodle soup :)

canned soups have a very high level of sodium...so they aren't that good for you in general.

They have tons of sodium, which is in general, bad for you. However when you are sick, it will help you retain water so it's good because you become dehydrated more easily when you're sick.

All fruits are fruit and vegetables. A "vegetable" is a plant, any part of which can be used for food.

In the superstore, fruits are usually selected far too soon. Some are rocks, many are wrong. Some of the fresh vegetables are generally right (zucchini, onions, garlic, lettuce, greens, and a few others) so I'd have to go with vegetables.
