It's the Epiphany, a Christian feast that in the traditional religious beliefs remembers the Magi (the Three Kings) offering gifts to the
Infant Jesus. In this day Spanish children (but also Italian childrnes) receives toys and other gifts that are usually left in a long sock by a kindly old witch (the Befana).

Well, I'm not sure about the Spanish, but in many Latin American countries celebrate Dia de los Reyes(Three Kings Day) on Jan. 6th. It is a day that celebrates the arrival of the three kings bringing gifts to baby Jesus. In Mexico, we give additional gifts to the children and eat a special sweet bread called the "rosca de reyes" It is a circle bread with a tiny baby figurine inserted in it. My family gives a special gift (usually money) to whoever gets the piece with the baby.
I know in Puerto Rico, many families celebrate Dia de Reyes with huge celebrations. They celebrate more on Jan. 6 than on Christmas Day.
Of course, every country, town, and family has their own traditions for this day of celebration.

I think presents are exchanged then because this is supposedly when the wise men came to give gifts to Jesus! (Although He was about 2 years old or so not a few days!) ;)
Happy Christmas!
