Is it safe to eat the green sprouts, that grows from the top whole onions? I have been eating the green sprouts from the onions you have mentioned for almost the forty eight yrs. I have been married, and I often use them when I want to add them to meats that I brown with some ground garlic, the sprouts from the onion and adding some ground pepper, with half a can of tomato sauce, salt to taste and you have a delicious meal that tastes real good. Try to make it once, and I know that you will like it.

Yes you can use them - let them grow a bit longer and you can use them as spring onion.
