I have a refigerator in the garage that is not heated, so initally I thought the fridge would have to run less often to keep contents cool. But then I got to wondering about how the fridge works, does the climiate affect the efficiency of the gas and compressor to produce cool temperatures?

A cold environment is more efficient for two reasons.

The compressor doesn't have to do as much work due to the lower discharge pressure.

There is less heat gain from the environment due to the lower temperature difference between the inside and outside of the refrigerator.

In the summer when the garage is likely to be much warmer, the exact opposite happens. The discharge pressure will be higher and the compressor will have to work harder. The temperature between the inside and out side of the refrigerator will be greater and more heat can get into the inside.

nope, the fridge should be more efficient. It rejects heat from the condenser coil (on the back of the fridge), and the greater the temperature difference (delta T) between the hot gas temperature and the ambient environment, the more efficient the cycle.

But the converse will be true. If you garage gets very hot in the summer, then it will have to run a lot (because the delta T is a lot lower).

The refrigerator will consume less energy if the ambient temperature is cooler.

To take an extreme example, if the outside temperature was the same as the inside temperature setting, sooner or later the compressor would not have to work to maintain the inside temperature.

In effect, you could open the door, the compressor would never kick in, and there would be no energy consumption.
