If this is new and you two really have just started seeing each other, get him something inexpensive but thoughtful.
If he has plants in his house, plants are nice. Even a cheap T-Shirt with something funny on it is ok. If nothing else and things don't go the way you'd like them to go, then those aren't putting you out much.
Whatever you do, nothing flashy nor expensive if this is something new.
