Can we all take a step back and risk looking at reality for a moment please?
FACTS:
1. OVER 25% of the population in the US have Herpes Simplex virus (cold sore), this CAN be transmitted oral-genitally to give genital herpes. Worldwide, this figure is 33-35%
2. 90%+ of carriers are NOT aware that they are infected - so unless this person had an outbreak at the time (which YOU should have spotted) then he may well have been unaware that he had it.
Asymptomatic shedding of herpes simplex viral particles turns many infected persons into unwitting transmitters of HSV - as such unless he had an utterly CRAP lawyer, this comes down to BOTH of you being involved in having unsafe sex.
Unless you can PROVE you were HSV neg (Herpes Simplex Virus) before the incident, he could also claim that YOU were the one that infected him.
As for the comment about everyone knowing abut him if you go to court as it will be a mtter of public record, I am sure the penny has dropped that YOUR name will ALSO be mentioned.
An unpleasant lesson. Play safe and look at what you play with carefully.

No, you can't get him sent to jail, but you can file a civil suit in small claims court. You can sue him for the medical expenses you incurred treating the Herpes infection that he gave you. You don't need a lawyer in small claims court, and in most places small claims cases are heard in the evening so you won't miss work or school to sue him. Also, it will become a matter of public record that he has Herpes once you sue him, because court records are open to the public.

I do belive there is a law that protects you. I'm not sure but i think that somone that has a std has a legal obligation to inform their partner before sex! It might be a civil issue so you can sue him in court. But the real question is do you really want to go through with the embarassment of going public with a court case about you having herpies? There are lots of very effective treatments avalable. It's not the end of your life. Have you been checked yet? It could just be a real bad yeast infection.

That's why you shouldn't have sex with people you're not married to. It's a bad idea. And that's not the way it's suposed to be. Learn from this. And warn other people.

Get a picture of him, down load the CDC logo and make up a sheet with his picture warning ladies that he is infected. Make a load of copies of these and post them in every ladies room in every bar in your city.

If he knows he has them in many states it would fall under their assault laws.You would have to go to court but I think it would be worth it.
