which round is better ak or ar? not looking for target accuracy at 300 yrds or ergonomics of gun etc.. just ballistic knock down power, ability to kill etc.

It's called shot placement. Both weapons are just as effective if aimed at the vital area. The AK does have the advantage of a larger, heavier bullet which will obviously have more knockdown power. But again, a precisely aimed shot with an AR-15 will be just as effective at killing as the AK. AKs are usually used by countries who can't afford an AR, unless of course they have developed their own weapon.

But why are you asking about killing humans?

Well...no one feels ambivalent towards the AR, the AK-47, or their ammuniton. Personally, I prefer the 7.62x39 round. The AK 47 round is quite similar to the American 30-30.

I've heard some say that the 5.56x45 round will tumble upon hitting a target and keyhole, I've also heard that they don't do this anymore, I've heard that the 5.56 round will fragment inside the body, i've also heard that it's happend only very very very rarely, I've also heard that the AK-47 is really a death ray, and only thinking about shooting some one with one will kill them.

I do know however, that the Marines in Iraq would like a harder hitting bullet. They don't think the 5.56 has enough raw knock down power. Of course, that doesn't neccessariy mean that the AK 47 is any better, or maybe their shotplacement isn't all it could be. But, looking at the size of lead that comes out of an AK 47, should say something. Its lead is the same size as the American .308 or 7.62X51. That's a pretty respectable size of projectile.

My two cents, as I stated earlier, I think the most deadly round up close and personal is the 7.62x39 AK-47.

I also call that comment about how AK's are for countries who can't afford ARs. The Aussies don't use AR's, the Brits, the French, The Sweeds. None of those folks use the AR, the list could go on and on. Granted, the AK is used by some poor countries, but don't hold that against it. I mean, it has at the very very least, held it's own against other more "sophisticated" weapons.

The 7.62x39 AK-47, at short range it's much more effective than 5.56x45 AR-15. The questionable accuracy of the AK isn't important at that sort of range.

At very short ranges the 223 is almost completely innefective as it doesn't tumble under 10m.

What do I get marked down for on this? Are you people ignorant? The military 223 rounds, SS109, M855 and M193 achieve their wounding potential due to tumbling and then breaking at the canelure (the groove for the crimp), which is an evasion of the Hague convention in that they are designed to cause the sort of wounds that soft point bullets produce. However, at short range they are going too straight and tend to just punch a 22 caliber hole through their target, they need to get to about 10 yards where the bullet has time to take the slight nose up pitch that bullets have in long range flight, this gets the point of impact off line from the track of the center of gravity so that the bullets tend to turn on impact. At long range, a few hundred yards with the M4, the velocity falls to the point where they can't fragment, they don't have enough energy. So an M4 is a 10-200m weapon. A bad guy with a FAL at 400m can kill GIs all day whilst being in little danger himself (until the air strike arrives).

The 7.62x39 reliably makes a more lethal wound at short range. It makes a bigger hole, it imparts more velocity to more fragments.

If you shoot someone in the head with either round they will be dead, but a random hit from a 7.62x39 at 50 yards is more likely to render a person incapable or dead than a random shot from a 223. This has been born out recently in Iraq where the troops are finding that the 223 isn't doing the job, so they are fielding 6.8SPC in an attempt to provide a round that will actually kill bad guys instead of sending them to the doctors the next day.

Sometimes I think you people just get irritated by anyone who doesn't love whatever the US has decided is the best, the AR is actually a very well developed but quite poor design, that's why other countries continue to make other things that don't have the ARs well known issues. Some idiot on Discovery channel actually called it the 'most powerful' assault weapon. What? Did my ears deceive me? Most powerful? So it's more powerful than a 30 round 7.62x51 like the Galil or FAL? It's probably the equal least powerful current assault weapon, but drill instructors for years have been saying what a miracle it is and people believe them.

Check out the link below for terminal (wound) ballistics. As a former weapon system designer I can tell you that tumbling and fragmenting is the normal behavior of the 5.56x45.

the ar 15 is a much smaller caliber but is much more accoret. The auto by kolostinov model 47 is more for closer range support fire and is not intended for accerucy, but is a larger caliber than the AR 15 . The ak 47 recoil is reduced by a gas chamber that connects to the barrel and is the most widly used gun today

I would go with the AK. I see some people need to learn to use spell check.

I believe that this would be based on personal taste. Both come in 5.56 mm rounds, but the AK-47 also comes in a 7.62mm round, which has more knock down power. They're both equally deadly.
