Look up the land lord teneant act. for your state or province. It will tell you the laws pretaining to renting and what your landlord can restrict.
I live in Toronto. Our Provintial act states that a landlord can not stop anyone from having a pet provided the tenant is responsible for cleaning and repairing any damage caused by the animal. And the animal is not an ilegal pet such as certain exotic animals. Also the landlord can ask that there are no pets and add it to the lease agreement but he has to tel lyou everything that is in it. Read it before you sign otherwise you could be agreeing to no guests after 10pm or something worse.
If the landlord refuses you the apartment you can contact the landlord tenant tribunal and they will tell the landlord he has to let you in. Or just don't tell the landlord you have a pet, but read the lease agreement before you sign it. But judging by the fact that they'll allow 25lb dogs then pets are allowed so he can't throw you out for a 50lb dog check the laws you'll see....

This is a tough one. I think people don't want big dogs for several reasons, especially in light of the two dogs in California who killed a tenant. Plus, they poop bigger piles, can scare people, etc. I prefer medium to large dogs, but I'm not renting out property. Look at alternatives to an apartment, perhaps a guest house or long term house sitting or property caretaking. Good luck.

Asking on here won't help very much. Just go nuts calling apartment complexes. People on here won't know where you live, where you want to live, and the apartment complexes in that area :/
Maybe look into Half Doubles and Houses. People and businesses rent those out and they might be set up to not only deal with a dog your's size but also give it a fenced in yard.

You will just have to keep looking, I went to my local grocery store chain and got a free rental advertisement magazine. The one I picked up noted the difference between "25lbs or less" and "large breed accepted". Also, try apartments.com, it has a check box for large dogs. The advanced search on www.move.com has a large dog check box as well.

Most appartments don't allow pets at all. Most require a hefty deposit if your planning on having animals due to the damage they cause. I recomend offering extra money for having the dog and/or try going through private appartment owners. Most of the property management people have set rules but a lot of the time if you go through private or personal property owners they'll work with you.

Many appartments may accept bigger dogs if they beleive that the owner is responsible. you can show this by getting your dog certified as a canine good citizen (CGC-an AKC award), having letters of reference from a Veterinarian, trainer and freinds showing that your dog is well cared for, and behaved. Talking to your future land lord being up front and honest, may just get you an apartment with your dog. may appartments only alow smalleer dog because they appear less threatening, and this is a good thing when it comes to a landlord, entering your appartment to do repairs, while you are at work.
Another suggestion is to take your well behaved dog to a meeting with your landlord. if your dog is truly well behaved then your posible land lord can see for himself. he may be impressed and grant you a lease.

Get a Realtor to help in your search. They'll do the legwork for you. Realtors are paid for by the owner/seller, so you may not have to pay them - probably will have an administration fee for the brokerage though - still, that is usually in the $200-$300 range. May be worth it for you
