It seems I can never alow myself to feel comfortable around people having conversations. I would love to join in because I would love to share my thoughts....problem is I can't. What do you recommend?

Try a similar approach to what I did--I promise it will help. When I decided I wanted to be an occupational therapist I knew I'd have to get over my shyness or fail at my dreams so I was very motivated.

I started slow--going to dinner with a friend and asking her to bring along someone I didn't know. This way it was a controlled situation. I'd set a goal for myself about how much I'd join in the conversation. Then I'd accept invitiations from friends even when I didn't know anyone else going. I started going to small parties and putting myself into situations that I knew were going to be uncomfortable for me... but I worked through them.

Take a good reflective look at where you are and where you want to be... Then set goals that will help you get there. Have a friend or family member help you if necessary.

This last summer I willingly signed up for an internship 3 hours from home to put myself in a situation where I would not know anyone and I was able to get through it just fine. I still don't like big parties but that was never a goal anyway. I can easily do public speaking and work in groups now...

Good luck. And if it is really negatively affecting your life, talk to a doctor about a referral. You may have social phobia and an anti-anxiety drug will help, but don't rely solely on medication!

Nothing wrong with being shy, at least you don't say anything stupid or anything that would embarrass you. If you want to join in, in conversations, then remember, you have to crawl before you walk. Go a little at a time. It'll take a little while, but you'll get over it. Best of luck to you.

Just come out and say what you want to say I alwayz do that, just say for instance if I want to say something and I'm scared to I just come right out and say it. When you say it your heart will probably start beating real fast but you will be alright in the end.
