My 17 months old daughter loves meeting people at the market, the park, the zoo and on walks. Today we brought her to an outdoor neighborhood party and she was terrified. I think it was all of the noise and kids running around screaming. Is this normal? Has anyone else experienced this and did your child outgrow it? What did you do to help? Thanks!

I think your daughter was overwhelmed with all of the excitement and yes, it is very normal for kids that small to feel that way. She is still very small and new things are going to scare her till she becomes older. I wouldn't fret much about it. The next time you take her to a party, get there early so she can adjust to everyone that comes in. That way, she isn't just thrown in and gets scared. As she grows, she will learn that it is ok and enjoy the parties.

She seems like a very social little girl--she just doesn't like places that are overwhelming.

When she meets people at the market or at the park, the setting is probably somewhat quit & the people she meets aren't running around or screaming. At the party, however, there's tons of people and just alot of things going on and it can be too much for a 17 month old to take in.

She may outgrow it, but she may not. She may just have the temperament of someone who likes to be around people, as long as it's not too much.

It's totally normal. My first born was the same way. I helped him by bringing things from home (toys, fav food, etc) that would comfort him. Be sure to take some time away from the crowd and craziness. Before you know it, she'll be one of the noisy kids. Atleast, that's what happend to mine by about age 4.

why don't you have a party for her? invite people she trusts and serve food she likes.
