I joined the service in 99. I remember before 9\11 most of the soldiers and sailors I know would lie about what they do for a living. Because being a soldier was Generally looked down upon by allot of Americans. That sentiment changed for awhile after
9\11. But things are going back to the way they where. I saw a video recently about a Corpsman coming back from Iraq. The one thing he was looking forward to was the thanks he would get when he got home. He got off the plain and no one was there. No band, no reporters, nothing just his father. Allot of our veterans that are coming home are not receiving the warm sentiments you see on fox news. The difference between Vietnam, and today is when people came home from Vietnam they where spit on and called baby killers. Today people just don't care. There are many soldiers coming home today that are suffering from post traumatic stress, they aren't getting the help they need because they don't know about it, or there afraid of repercussions from seeking treatment. Watch in about 15 years you will see just as many homeless scarred vets in the streets from this war, as there where in Vietnam. I guess it comes down to weather you would rather come home to a country that despises you, or come home to one that just doesn't care. It's a sad state of affairs regardless

Because of the media>We only know what we see and are told in vietnam children were being used to kill us by their own people, so if we saw a kid with explosives and shot him we "are baby-killers". Now in Iraq the world media is there and we see everything , we can see what is happening as it happens not what is censored by the government.
Either way ,like it or not, we should treat ALL veterans with respect they stood up for their country (right or wrong) and put their lives on the line so other can speak their minds and try to live their own lives.

Because *WE* did what was necessary to change the publics attitude after the way *WE* were treated returning from Vietnam,,,, Or did you think it was because of some kind of fluke or something??
You see, not all Vietnam vets are cry babies as you would have everyone believe. Many of us took active rolls in government inorder to change how vets were treated.

Because mainstream medial lost a lot of credibility after the Viet Nam affair. The Media turned the American people against the military. A lot of people realized that there was a big division between them, and the people they were getting their news from.
The media today are still purveyors of propaganda, but they soft peddle attacks on the military. They have been demonizing Muslims for several years. Can you imagine if the news was as anti-Jewish as its portrayal of Muslims? I am not talking about the terrorists, I am referring to the ordinary people in Iraq.
Yes, it is true. The American people treated returning soldiers from Viet Nam shamefully. And there were a lot of high profile people who gave aid and comfort to the enemy, like Hanoi Jane (Fonda). These people were never prosecuted.

The American public learned some lessons from Vietnam. The US government, Bush, Cheney and Rumsfield in particular, obviously did not.

Because younger Americans appreciate combat vets more than in the 60's and 70's.

because they felt that the Vietnam war was not as important as the Iraq war and also that people support what Bush doing in Iraq it not really the real reason but both of them went over their to keep freedom but since we didn't have the same urge to make freedom in Vietnam than Iraq then it different but i believe you should treat these people with respect because they fighting for peace but i believe that if we get out of Iraq then it will be more stable in Iraq and they finally have peace but that won't happen until Bush out of office.

I agree that the prior generation was full of political idiots. But true today as well.
I think today there are alot less peace queers and alot more guys like me that would jump in and beat the hell out of someone if I saw them spit on a service member.
Remember that if you think about it spitting on em in Texas. Good way to get you *** kicked.

Wow, erudite, how can you change your tune like that? Just a few posts ago you were calling Vietnam Vets liars because they never were treated as badly as they claimed! Which is it -- were they abused or not?
Get a life.

Those commie (and yes many embraced communism, and carried Mao's little red book) destroyed their already tiny ineffectual little brains to the point that they are now a bunch of drooling imbeciles. Babies pretty much treat everybody nice as well.
