I just adopted a pure bred german shepherd from the local Humane Society. He cost $65. If you want to help with the control on pet population-that's the way to go. Too many unwanted animals are abandoned and put to death. It's sad.

Why would you pay high prices for one that is not purebred?? (to horse crazy)

I just ran across a breeder where I live that is selling AKC German Shepherds for $500 for females and $450 for males - another one is asking $600 for females and $575 for males. So my best guess would be between $500 - $1000 or better.

$700-$1200 for pet quality from a reputable breeder.
$1000-$2500 for show quality from a reputable breeder.
$900-$1200 for an un-healthy, sick GSD from a pet store.
$400-$600 from a backyard breeder.
$50-$150 (ADULT GSD) from a rescue/shelter.
$150-$250 (PUPPY GSD) from a rescue/shelter.

Be sure to get one from a REPUTABLE BREEDER that provides hip certificates for hip dysplasia and any other hereditary diseases.

*******And please don't over-rule GSDs from a rescue group or your local RSPCA/ASPCA. I went to my local RSPCA a few weeks ago and they had 3 purebred GSDs for $120 and 2 GSD mixes for $120.*********

look for a free one first. my wife and I found a purebreed german shepard with certificates for free. But if you have to pay, get a retired police dog, around my area they go for around $400 and are obviously fully trained.
