I didn't realise cats could live so long. Hopefully her cat will stay healthy and strong for many years to come

Like us, how long a cat lives will depend on many things, from genetics to good nutrition and healthcare and the good fortune to avoid fatal illness or accident. But as a good general guide, a 17-year-old cat is in relative terms about the same as a human in their mid-80's.
A 1-year old cat can be equated to a 15 year-old human - then add 5 human years for every 1 cat year up to 7, then 4 human years for every 1 cat year thereafter. A 21 year-old cat should be receiveing a telegram from the Queen!

It really depends on the life style of the cat. If it is an indoor cat, they are generally more healthy because they are not as exposed to parasites and other animal that are carrying diseases. My parents had a cat that was full grown when she turned up on their doorstep. They took her in and she lived with them for another 23 years before passing. So we don't know exactly how old she really was. As long as the cat is vaccinated and fed a healthy diet, it could live for many more years.

I have a cat right now that's at least 21 years old. We found her eating out of a dumpster. She's an outdoor cat, and eats scraps- just a lucky one I guess.
The last two cats I had lived into their their late teens and early twenties too! People always tell me they only live 8-9 years. So much for that.

i've got heard that a 12 months in a cat's existence is approximately corresponding to 5 human years. for that reason, maximum cats stay to someplace between 13-18 years, assuming no significant well-being issues that could shorten their lives. the main mandatory issues are to take good care of your cat - good high quality foodstuff, time twiddling with the cat, good beds and toys, and widely used vet visits! I even have an just about 10-12 months-previous cat and a 2 a million/2 12 months previous cat. They the two have been generally nice. i've got advised my older cat that he has to stay until he's a minimum of sixteen (a healthful sixteen, no longer a depressing sixteen), so he must be healthful for yet another 6 years! good luck with your cat.

About the maximum age for cats is 21. It is very rare to have a cat live that long, though. The oldest I have had a cat live is 18 years.

on average cats lives from anywhere between 15 to 25 years. It also depends on: how healthy the cat is, if it had any previous owners,if it has been looked after and the breed of a cat. BTW, a mixed breed cat is more likely to live longer b/c they a less prone to the health issues of a pure breed cat. (but they all require shots, especially if they go outside)
hope this helps!!

Yeap, sometimes they live a long time. My grandmother had a cat show up on her doorsteps (she was old when she was found) the day after her husband (my grandfather died) we believe she was about eight and lived completly outdoors and she lived to the age of18-20. (she stayed with my grandmother for 11 years)

I have a friend who has a cat that is 19-20 and is still healthy too.

Under 5 years for an outside cat, 8-10 years for an indoor/outdoor cat and 14 for a cat who only lives indoors. She's obviously one beloved pet who has been very well cared for to be so long lived.

Poppy,

My parents gave me a kitten when I was 12 and we grew up together too. Like your daughter and her cat. What an amazing gift you have given your daughter.

My cat was almost 20 when it was his time. He couldn't hold his urine anymore and it was just time. I took him to the vet. You know, it was decision I had always thought I'd be afraid to make, after all, who am I to decide, when it's somebody's time, that job definitely belongs to someone else, not me. But with my Handsome, I just knew. And I was okay with it. I've been very blessed that I was able to have 2 children and have them meet him and hopefully be old enough that they will have some recollection of him when they grow up.

I pray for your daughter that she will be afforded the same peace and comfort I was given when it is her cat's time.
