I'm going to help you out with a tip you may not like, but its honest:
Men don't pick up subtle hints. Men rarely pick up obvious hints.
If you're going to be subtle, ask him questions like if he's seeing anyone. That's a big one. Or ask him to a movie with your friends, but then call him 30 min before and say your friends cancelled, but you two can still go. Something that's not totally overt, but sends a clear message is what you're going for.

Though question. Been there, still there. hun. But just smile I him. Make conversation. get to know him. He'll get the hint. Tell your friends to giggle when he talks to you. Or to make little comments to hint him on........if he doesn't catch on then you are in the same mess as me.

-whnevr u see him give him a smile
-if he needs help wit somein be the first to go over and help him
-have regular conversation wit him (and dont be to shy to do that)
-go in a group wit him to the mall
-make friends wit him first
