Don't think for a minute that I can't understand or empathize with your concerns for your son--I've been through it twice and am getting ready to go through it for a third time, probably within the next month--one son, coming up for his third tour.

Longer than Vietnam? No, not really, because we ended up bogged down there from the late 1950's to the early 1970's. I remember reading the casualty reports in the paper for myself--it was much higher on a weekly basis than it has been in Iraq.

I know of a woman who lived in Fayetteville NC (home of Fort Bragg and the 82nd Airborne Division) all her life; her father was an Army career man, and the street she grew up on got the nickname of "Widows' Alley" because every house on the street, with the exception of the one she and her family occupied, lost the father and husband in Vietnam.

There is an unfortunate yet nonetheless compelling reason why the military won't recruit the men in their 40's and 50's--and that is the simple fact that younger men have more stamina and strength than their fathers tend to. Experience is fine, but it's hard to fight when your joints hurt or you're overweight. Remember, the physical fitness standards in the military are lowered slightly for every year a man ages once he's over 25 or 30.

My husband retired from the Air Force in 1998, and even at that point he was unable to do things he'd been able to at 25, like climbing into the wheel well of a jet to see why the hydraulics weren't working.

The sad fact is that the young are in better physical shape and can more readily adapt to the training necessary for combat--and it's that training that helps keep them alive.

I wish you well, and hope that your young soldier comes back to you soon.
