I'm trying to learn all that I can about all branches of Christianity. The LDS Church seems like a pretty complicated one to comprehend. Some LDS I know seem to have changed their minds recently about things they used to believe; please help me to understand.

Took place?
Well, most try not to worry about that, and just focus more on the lessons to be learned. But there are some ideas... and it's generally believed to have taken place somewhere in South America/Latin America (Hence--the origin of all those tribes down there), and maybe even up into what's now the U.S.

good question

The LDS Church is not a branch of Christianity, they condemn Christianity and usurp the name.

According to the Book of Mormon, Jews migrated from the Middle East to Central and South America and established great civilizations on the continents of North and South America. The Book of Mormon states that large cities were built so that by 322 A.D. "The whole face of the land had become covered with buildings and the people were as numerous almost as it were the sand of the sea." (Mormon 1:7) Thirty-eight cities are specifically mentioned in the Book of Mormon. Also in the final battle between the Nephites and Lamenites, 230,000 Nephites were killed near the hills of Cumorah in New York.
With such a vast population and cities, one would expect to find numerous archaeological evidences to substantiate such large civilizations. However, there is no evidence to validate the claims of the Book of Mormon. Despite expeditions financed by the Mormon Church, archaeologists have concluded the Book of Mormon is not historical but a work of fiction.

Joseph Smith supposedly got special tablets with which he had some special glasses to be able to read them. Jesus supposedly came here to North America and preached the gospel to various Indian tribes which are mentioned. Big problem is that there is no such archaeological or cultural evidence of any Indian tribes ever existing which has lead to some members of Mormonism to leave that church. The locations are now being said to be in South America because there are some native Indian names that have some similar letters in their names as the ones they want to believe in but this is really just a revision of the fact that the whole scenario has fallen apart in this area. The other thing that in the past the Mormons were racist toward blacks in that they said that God marked Cain black and all his decendants to show His displeasure in them even though the Bible does not state this. They are are now trying to get past that kind of thinking. Also the mainstream Mormons has changed their views on practicing poligamy which only a few extreem sects of mormons still practice as current news reports tell us.

The general consensus is somewhere around Southern Mexico and Guatemala.

A good resource to learn about our basic beliefs is here: http://www.mormon.org/welcome/0,6929,403-1,00.html from the official church website.

Thanks
