Just an all purpose quality knife brand. Anyone?

I carry a Buck fixed blade and I have a Gerber folder (not because Buck folders are bad or Gerber fixed blades are bad, it is just what I happen to own). I like both brands, they are, IMO, great values. They take and hold an edge, no rust problems, handles are rugged (never loosen) and I can afford one without having to take out a second mortgage. My only concern is replacing my folder. I really abuse it and as such I wear one out about every two or three years. I don't like serrated blades and a regular edge is getting harder to find with each passing day.

I hope that helps.

Buck knives, Schrade, are good companies leatherman and gerber are also good. I personally do not own one of these knives just because My hunting knife I bought through the North American Hunting Club as a custom made one. Its the best knife I have ever used its made by Custom Cutlery I believe.

Camillus makes great knives at a reasonable price. Case is not as good as it used to be. Schrade went out of business and is now a cheap knife made in China. If you can find an older one made in the US it is a good knife

I have had a spyderco for like 15 years. Never had to sharpen it. I have used i for skinning, cutting just about anything in camp, and I have even opened a can of soup with it. They have many models but they are all lock-blades and they kick ***. Paramedics use them for cutting people out of car wrecks.

There is no one answer to that question. It depends entirely on the genre of your work and the amount of time and effort you are willing to put into getting published. You need to get a copy of Writers Market 2007 and start reading and advocating for yourself. You will not get through to the major publishers without an agent - know that up front. So you need to search the agent listings as well as the small publishing house listings for those accepting work in your genre. Then you need to search through Preditors and Editors and Absolute Write Water Cooler Bewares and Background Checks for information about that publisher and/or agent. There are many fakes, frauds and scams out there. Those are the best sites for searching out information on publishers, editors and agents. Then you must follow their submission requirements exactly. Never send a complete manuscript unless it is requested. You usually begin with a query letter and a synopsis - done in the number of pages the submission requirements request. NEVER copyright your material first. It is a sign of an amateur writer and very unprofessional. It shows the publisher or agent you dont trust them. By all means, avoid self publishing. It is a financial black hole. You will dump tons of money and time into your book in return for very little. You will have to pay a great deal of money to have it edited. You will have to pay for an ISBN number. Then you will have to pay for promotion - a lot of promotion. All a self publisher/vanity press will provide you is a box of low quality books for you to sell yourself. The average number of sales for a self published books is around 100 - a losing proposition. Only NINE books in history have made it from being self published to the best seller list. One was The Celestine Prophecy - a very exceptional book that the author spent a fortune promoting. For most people, it just means you have books to sell to family and friends so you can call yourself a published author. However since anyone can self publish anything they want, the traditional publishing industry does not consider self published authors to be "published authors". An agent would laugh if you referred to yourself as "published" that way. It is the industry joke. Be prepared to send your query out again and again and get a nice pile of rejection letters. Gone With the Wind got 50. James Patterson got over 70 before he sold a book. Be prepared to spend endless amounts of time working on getting yourself published - working 7 days a week even holidays and Sundays because in addition to working on getting published, you have to work on a second book. And be prepared to do all of this while you continue to work your regular job to support yourself. Only something like 5% of authors earn a living at it. This is a bleak image, I know, but it can be done. You just have to stop depending on the simple answers like coming to Yahoo Answers for information and start pushing yourself hard and learning the business yourself. Most people learn the hard way. You can spend time at Resolved Answers reading through keywords publisher and publishing. Print out a bunch and study them. There are both good and bad answers there. You also need to spend time in bookstores studying what is selling and what is not. All while polishing your book and learning your craft. Good luck to you. With a lot of work and a little bit of luck, it can be done. But I dont sugar coat the process. Pax - C
