The dog is about 8 years old (not quite sure, he was a stray we found). What is the best way to get the dog to go back to eating from his food, from his own bowl?

Very simple - stop giving him people food. Then he will go back to eating his food, from his bowl, because no dog is going to starve himself to death. He's not eating his food now because he doesn't have to - when he does, he will.

Make sure your dog is no longer getting ANY people food at all and that the only food available is the food in his bowl. I guarantee he will start eating his own food within a day or two. If he's really hungry, he will eat what is available. The trick is to stick with it, and make sure the 2 year old CAN'T give the dog anything. (Separate them at meal times if you have to. It may be a pain, but it will save you grief in the long run!)

If he's hungry enough, he'll eat his kibble. Dogs can be stubborn, but unless he's got some sort of health problem that strikes when he hasn't eaten in a while, all you have to do is be more stubborn than him.
Your challenge will be in keeping your toddler from feeding him and reinforcing the dog's habit. If he occasionally gets human food, he'll keep bugging your child until he or she feeds him, and begging will turn into a lottery your dog can't stop playing.

well first things first, anytime people eat, the dog should be placed in his kennel. this should be started from puppy hood it helps stop begging. and make sure anytime your 2 year old snacks the dog isnt around, outside or in his kennel. remember the kennel isnt punishment. or crate somepeople call it. start a feeding schedule for the dog. morning, lunch and dinner for now. i know he is older but sooner or later he will get hungry. feed at whatever time you guys get up, leave the food down 20 minutes, what isnt eaten save it for later. do the same thing with lunch and dinner, and make sure to crate him while your child is eating. and make sure your child knows feeding the dog is grounds for punishment so he will stop. eventually the dog will get hungry and give in. and make sure to stick with the schedule the dog will normally like to have feeding times. once he is back to eating his food he might be able to quit eating lunch, most older dogs dont eat it its mainly for puppies but i think since he isnt eating it it should be offered because you never know when he will be so hungry as to say forget waiting on human food, im going to eat this. also, try mixing it with a little wet dog food and putting it in the microwave for like 15 seconds. it might help out. my dog likes it. human food isnt good for the dogs all the time it can hurt their stomach..hope this help out some..if not..try asking a vet what to do.

If I was you I would take your dog to the vet because eating table food is very unhealthy for a dog.

Well what do you expect? He was given nice, warm, salty, tasty human food for so long and now you expect him to eat hard, dry, smelly dog food? He's smarter than that =)
