iTunes won't allow me to click/drag and convert my protected .wma files to its library. i have a converter, but it won't touch the protected files. is there a way to get iTunes to accept these files (in any round-about way)?

The short answer is protected WMA are VERY difficult to manipulate. If you can play them, you MAY be able to re-record them into a non-protected version, but getting rid of protection on the original files are next to imposible.

There are methods, just like there are methods to rob a bank.
Apple and Microsoft both try to use technical means to create a monopoly on the transmission of cultural content.

go to emusic.com (music without DRMs) or jamendo.com (free music obviously the quality can vary) and do not try to get access to any DRMed content.

Call your representative and explain to him/her that the DMCA (if you are american), or EUCD (if you are European) are harming you.
Do not try to have a small imediate adventage while condoning a business model that is destroying you liberties.
(DRMs are creating monopolies, and forcing you to install a COP on your personal computer, it is approximately the same thing as having a pair of video camera in your car one tracking you the other tracking external trafic to check if you are doing anything "wrong")
