I moved from Brooklyn to the west as a teenager just out of high school. I enrolled at a university in the west and joined a fraternity there. My frat brothers and I had such trouble understanding each other's English, that we sometimes found it easier to communicate in Spanish. The main thing I had to learn was to over-pronounce "R" sounds (as if I was making fun of the way westerners talk). Once I learned to do that, everybody could understand me. I have generally used "you" for both the singular and plural second person pronoun, but, having been in the west for a few years now, I sometimes find myself using "you-all," especially when it's plural.

Listen to the national newscasters on TV. They are trained to talk with an accent (from Ohio) that nobody considers strange.

I lived in Brooklyn for 43 years. I then moved to the Midwest.

At my age, it is not an accent - it is a speech impediment. 9-)

We have a tendency to drop the r and add it to words that end in vowels. It comes from the origins of the people in Brooklyn. Very Irish in this case.

Bill Moyers did a show a few years ago on the origins of English. It is available on DVD, and is in most libraries. Give it a viewing, it will give you much insight into why Bostonians Pak the Ca, why Brooklyn-ites drop r's and add them elsewhere, and why Bronx folks say berl the erl, and of course -youse guys.

Don't worry about how you say what you do, we get used to it. You just have a little accent!

people from brooklyn have accents because brooklyn has different people of different cultures living in it. not everybody in brooklyn is a straight up all american that speaks perfect english. depends where you come from everybody everywhere in every city has people with an accent. the way you made that statement is like you trying to surprise people like it is unbelievable from what you see. people from brooklyn, ny say y'all? are you on drugs? this is not the south. black people say that because they speak blackenese. white people and normal people say you. not ya'll.

water= wah ter, aunt= awnt, store= st oh r, father= fah ther. Do not worry about your accent. It takes time to adjust ti different pronunciations. In time you will just learn the"local way to talk".
