You don't say if you have kids: no chihuahuas with little kids! It's too easy for them to get hurt by a young child. A Cavalier King Charles spaniel is great if you like a lap dog: they're very sweet and very quiet as a rule. Maltese are also small lap dogs and tend to be very sweet. Bichon Frise's are also very sweet, lap type dogs. Border terriers are also terrific pets, more bold than the others mentioned and quite civilized for a terrier! Similarly, the standard schnauzers (not mini as these are more hyper and noisy) is a great dog. The spaniel, maltese, bichon and schnauzer need to be brushed or clipped while the border terrier's coat should be "pulled" periodically, so think about how much "hairdressing" you're willing to do or pay someone else to do before buying a long haired or wire-haired breed.
Whatever breed you choose, PLEASE research the breeder carefully to ensure you get a physically and mentally healthy dog. Expect to pay well up front for a well-bred puppy: you'll ave money over the long run in vet or trainer bills to deal with numerous problems. Do not under any circumstance buy from a pet shop or puppy "outlet:" these puppies are mass produced without any regard for health or temperament. They are often extra hard to housetrain cause they're kept in cages all the time and often have behavior problems ranging from extreme shyness to extreme aggression and/or various neurotic habits like chewing themselves bloody or barking obsessively. Many have severe health problems that will surface at some point. The AKC website has a guide to choosing a breeder that is excellent. You'll want to think, first, about all the attributes that matter to you, such as length of hair, temperament, delicacy, adaptability. In other words, decide what the perfect dog would be like and use that as the basis for choosing a certain breed. You can also go onto www.petfinder.com if you want to rescue a dog that has been spayed or neutered, temperament tested, wormed and vaccinated, etc. They often have young dogs/older puppies available for adoption. Good luck! Hope you find your new best friend soon!

Shelties are small wonder dogs. Some do bark but you'll find that with any breed as that is part of the dog's temperment. My aunt has owned Shelties for over 16 years and breeds them, none of them bark but once in a great while. If you work with them if they are barkers, you can easily change that behavior.

Most small dogs tend to be "barkers", it up to you to train the dog not to bark. Mini Schnauzers are great little dogs.

I like French Bulldogs. They get to around 24 lbs (but they are very stocky and don't look like they weight that much). They are not yappy, and then don't shed a whole lot. Also, they have a very sweet temperament and are very social without being extremely clingy. I have never seen one that was mean.

Try a Beagle they don't get that big and if you train them right they won't bark all that much either.
