I don't see how adding 30,000 troops, or even 300,000, can ever stop the two tribes from hating and killing each other. Their conflicts start a thousand years ago and will last for another thousand years.

Right now they are fighting against each other, but I am afraid that eventually one day they will want to form an allignment to eliminate all foreign troops on their land first, and then go back to their own problems.

Maybe that's when Bush claims the victory?!

The US can't do anything about that, there seems to be a lack of consensus building in some places in the world and Iraq is one of them. Even in something as divided and hateful as the 2000 election the losing side didn't pick up guns and didn't start car bombing the republican party headquarters. Though,we can't forget we helped start the storm though and now we're telling the Iraqis to "fix their own problem" that we help set into motion.

It is very easy to get people to hate each other. It is difficult to get them to stop hating each other.

Unfortunately, human nature being what it is, people identify other people as members of a group. If that person does something to you, there is a chance that you will resent, or even hate that group. Now, you attack an innocent member of that group. Another member of that group attacks a member of your group.

Politicians have been demonizing groups for thousands of years. The Nazis demonized the Jews. The Communists demonized the "capitalists" (Class Struggle). Its all a struggle for control.

I wish I knew how to stop it.

It would be easier to get yankees fans and red sox fans to be friends than to get the Sunni and Shittes together.

That's what they should do - go back to their own problems. Killing each other off...it's revolting and barbaric.
