You don't say what you are offering, so the simple answer is this: People buy from people they like. So the more people you meet, and the friendlier you are to them, the more people will buy from you.
Yes, networking is a wonderful way to win new clients. Another way is to use your existing clients to find new ones ... ask your clients about their friends, ask for referrals, join their volunteer organizations, etc.
If you know 20 people, and each of them knows 20 people, and each of them knows 20 people, that's a potential circle of 8,000 people who could be your clients, all of whom are just a phone call or in IM away.

Look for networking groups in your area. I belong to Business Builders of St. Petersburg, a group of 30 business people (mostly small business owners) who utilize the products and services of other members and refer friends/family to them as well. From there, other networking opportunities will present themselves. You can put together a nice marketing package targeted to the intended audience and start pounding the pavement. Always include something like candy so they will be sure to open the package. You can use this as an excuse to call back to see if the package was received and start a conversation with the receptionist to find out who the decision maker is. Once you find that out you can start making phone calls and sending information to their attention and get an appointment to make your presentation. Then ask for the business!

If you 'do networking', then use your networking skills to gain new clients! If you can't 'walk the walk' but only 'talk the talk', you won't get or keep very many clients.

Hi,
I have a friend who is a lawyer, and he goes to conventions, etc. every year. Also, I would recommend getting involved in the community, non-profits, church, temple, etc.
You'll slowly build up a nice network of friends, and perhaps future clients.
Regards,
