I've witnessed something very similar when young woman at a walmart wished an older man a "Happy Holidays" and he got right in her voice and was almost shouting at her "It's Christmas, dammit, why don't you wish me a Merry Christmas instead of this Happy Holiday crap. This is a Christian country so the holiday is Christmas, so why don't you say so?...blah...blah...blah" until the poor girl looked like she was going to cry.
It was a disgusting display of vitriol and intimidation from someone supposedly following a "loving" religion. And sadly his attitude is becoming more and more common.
Bottom line: I don't care HOW you greet me over the Holiday Season, but it had better be friendly and sincere.

If you just say something without thinking too much about it, say whichever you like. If you're putting a lot of thought into this, say Happy Holidays. Otherwise you're consciously neglecting a significant part of the population.
As for the situation, I'm assuming she was being lectured for not saying Merry Christmas. Do people not realize the irony in spreading intolerance and hate over such a non-issue? Hopefully, the woman has realized from this that people will make fools out themselves over this issue, and hopefully that means she won't let it bother her as much next time.

I live in Northern California, where there are many Jews Muslims, Buddhists and Jehovah's Witnesses. Most people, of course, celebrate Christmas, but not all.
I find that with fellow Christians or people that celebrate Christmas, I say Merry Christmas. However, I think businesses should say Happy Holidays or the regular Have a Nice day.

Most business request their employees to say "Happy Holidays" instead of "Merry Christmas". I'm a Christian, in my personal life, I wish people a "Merry Christmas"; in my professional life I say "Happy Holidays". If that person started in on me, I would politely tell them that I was not intending to offend them, but that I was also not being paid enough to take their abuse - I'd then give them my manager's phone number (if they weren't there) or get the manager to deal with the situation (if they were there). If I was the manager, I'd tell the person to stop. If they did not, I'd tell them to leave and not come back.

Well that is just stupid. I mean I rather say Merry X-mas, but if someone says happy holidays it's cool. Those people just take the fun out of our holidays. They are just narrow minded people who don't think about other peoples feelings. I am sure that lady was just trying to be nice.

The woman was just being silly it's Christmas. To Jews, Atheist, Baddest, Pagans every one it's Christmas. It might not be their holiday but it's Christmas wishing Happy Holiday is just silly. An Atheist opinion anyway. xx
