I mean, deliberately creating a mongrel then mashing the name of the parents together and calling it a 'designer dog'. There is no thought to combining the best of a breed. Just what looks cute. At a cheaper price with no papers, no akc health clearance and apparently no thought, because it seems to be exclusively small or toy breeds. I mean you dont hear of 'daneweilers' or 'doberstiffs' do you. It just makes me so mad because its not quality its saleabilty.

Oh, it's awful.

A friend of the family bought a $600 Puggle; when they were told they weren't allowed to keep it in their apartment, they decided that they were going to dump it, unspayed, alongside the road.

I intervened, took it in, and placed an ad in the newspaper for them, but decided to refer to it as a Pug/Beagle mix, in an attempt to not propagate any more "designer dog" madness.

I couldn't even GIVE the poor thing away... even offering to throw in her crate, food and toys, it took me forever to find her a home.

Had I referred to it as a Puggle, and attempted to charge $600 for it, I probably would have had it sold the next day. ;)

And what really gets to me is that the owners of these "designer dogs" proudly claim that the breed will be registered with the AKC within two years.

Yeah, right... even if it was, what good is it going to do them, then? What are they going to do, call the AKC and say... "Hey, I bought a Puggle two years ago; mind writing me up some papers for it now that it's a breed?"

Ha. I can't wait for this craze to die down.

My problems is the utter UNTRUTHS that are represented by these "breeders" of mutts!! Oh yes, when you combine a Lab and a Poodle you get a super smart dog that does not shed. And Puggles don't shed, bark, howl, or run. Any Poodle mutt NEVER sheds. And NONE of these mutts EVER have health problems....we all know that a mutt is incapable of health problems because they are mutts!!

GIVE ME A FREAKING BREAK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Putting two breeds together DOES NOT give you the best of both breeds and cancel out the negatives!!!! Get a brain MORONS!!!!!!!!!!!! That would be a great thing if it was true!!!! Genetics DOES NOT work that way! ANY person with a single functioning brain cell can figure that out!!!!!!! And know enough NOT to pay for it!!!!!!!!
I could ALMOST deal with it if it wasn't for the LIES told to sell these MUTTS!! All the puppies in the litter will be different since they ARE MUTTS. But no mutt-breeder will tell anyone that!!!

Animals which are bred (as a new breed) in order to bring out specific characteristics -- whether physical (designer dogs) or behavioral (such as a collie or a sheep dog) -- become prone to physical problems. For example, collies are more susceptible to arthritis; sheep dogs are susceptible to eye disease and a whole host of other problems. See the link below for a complete list by breed. This next paragraph is a bit graphic in terms of shelter statistics so don't read further if you might get quesy . . .

Do I have a problem? Yeah, I got a problem living in a throw-away society. I got a problem with people buying designer animals when so many need to be adopted out of the shelter. Now for the grim statistics:

Number of cats and dogs entering shelters each year:
6-8 million (HSUS estimate)

Number of cats and dogs euthanized by shelters each year:
3-4 million (HSUS estimate)

Number of cats and dogs adopted from shelters each year:
3-4 million (HSUS estimate)

Yup. I got a problem.

No. I have a problem with "show" dogs that are bred strickly for show qualities but might not be best for the actual dog. For example, breeding dogs who are related because they have a quality that is desirable for showing. Contrary to what you say, there is thought as to combining the best of a breed such as when you combine a poodle and a labrador to get a smart, even tempered animal that doesn't shed. I don't understand why people even think it's any of their business what kind of dog other people want. And NO, I don't own a designer breed, so there.

The saddest part of this is the breeder of the pure bred dog ... seeing his line (and his kennel's reputation) tainted by folks who intentionally use one of his pups to make mongrels that probably will make more money than he ever did for his pedigreed dog.

Amen to you!
I too despise this new trend, as well as those who produce the dogs, and those who then buy them ingnorantly.

It sickens me to no end. Just more people who should not be allowed to have dogs in the first place.

Yes they are cute so they became popular and when a breed(or mix) gets popular their breeding goes down the drain. It's Sad
