I have a male and female parakeet, Danny and Cleo. This morning i looked in the cage and i noticed that Danny had a drop of dried blood on his cere by the little hole thing. Theres also a drop of dried blood on the perches. Does anyone know why he is bleeding and what can i do? Do you think that Cleo and him got in a pecking fight? (they do this often), but they also really love eachother. Danny doesnt seem like hes in pain and he seems really happy. Please help!

Mated birds fight all the time- my cockatiels do as well. If it is not bleeding anymore, dont worry- maybe she pecked him and the sensitive area around the nose got torn. As long as it looks like it is outside and not coming from the nose, I wouldn't worry.

Well First of all do not open mans link. It leads to some site about making stuff for charging mp3 players and stuff. Now to the bird delema. Really in my opinion if they seem to be getting along while you are around i dont see why you would seperate them. My cousin has 2 parakeets together and they get in fights as you said but they never have bled because of it. Make sure that there is nothing in the cage that is sharp or dangerous to the birds. If the other bird cleo is not bleeding than i would think that it was another item in the cage the she doesnt like. Maybe a toy that Danny likes is a toy that cleo doesnt go near because of territorial reasons. So I would strongly recomend that you figure out if it is a cage issue toy issue or the birds fighting. If the birds are fighting and it results in blood seperate them, but he might seem lonely because of this. Always always keep Quick Stop which is a powder of liquid that stops the bleeding since birds are so small they can actualy bleed to death. And if it is a fight issue i once again must say seperate them but when seperating them put the 2 cages next to each other. Since birds can have heart attacks easy try to get this issue resolved A.S.A.P.

I hope this help your birdy delema

Maybe if Danny's beak was getting too long he tried to shorten it by rubbing it against the cage/perches. It is a possibility that Danny and Cleo got into a fight and one ended up hurt. I would check up on Danny and make sure he is not bleeding anywhere else and as long as there is not too much blood and Danny acts fine they should be okay.
PS. If you find out Danny's beak is too long then you should go to a vet once a month (more or less depending on how fast his beak grows) and have it trimmed. If Danny acts weird though take him to a vet. Also it could've happened in the night if it was dark and he needed food/water just be careful and your birdies will be fine :)

Sounds like maybe they were playing a little too rough, which is nothing to worry about if there is no active bleeding. Next time you are at a good quality pet shop, ask for a styptic stick. It is a container that looks similar to chapstick that will stop bleeding immediately. The little guys will not hurt each other intentionally, and it is most likely one of them had a misgrown feather that needed to be pulled, so the other obliged her friend. NEVER ATTEMPT TO TRIM A BEAK YOURSELF!!!!!! This is rarely if ever required for an active healthy bird, that has several play toys and a cuttlebone or perch to hone their beaks on, especially in the smaller breeds like yours. Spray them down with a clean squirt bottle, and don't worry, unless you find active bleeding. Keep an eye on them for several hours... Birdman

I have 4 parakeets now and I've had pairs in the past and, yes they DO peck at each other every now and then but are ususally too fast to get hurt. Cleo (also the name of my sisters' bird) was caught off guard and allowed Danny to peck her to bleed. Just keep a watchful eye. You may have to separate them.

It could mean that they did get in a pecking fight, or the cere was getting uncomfortable and he scraped it on the perch.

cut the beak, take it in the shower with you, so you can get the blood washed out. Try seperating the birds, because that happend to my bird, when they got in fights, and they were bleeding in the same place, so SEPERATE the birds, before it gets worse.

I would get him checked at vet if you see anymore. Dont clip his beak yourself. Per my vet they can bleed to death from the beak if it is trimmed incorrectly. They have a liquid they put on the end to seal it off. Good luck!

It is probably blood, and very unhealthy blood because it is dark. The female might have been biting the male though and got the blood on herself, or her nose might be bleeding, or her head! If you SEE them fighting then separate them. ~Hope this helps!
