yes they lost tons of battles at the beginning of the war but when general U.S. Grant stepped in they won the war!!!

The Union or the North won the Civil War. The South was defeated because Sherman and Grant wouldn't give up and kept moving forward. They didn't care about public opinion and both had a questionable background that gave them the strength and levelheadness to be tough.

I hate to break this to you but the Union won the civil war. However, General Lee of the Confederacy did win many battles against the Union but he lost the big one, Gettysburg, that eventually decided the course of the war.
