From waist-length to a short pixie. That's a radical change, to be sure.

If she's crying now that you've cut off her ponytail, maybe you should stop there and just tidy up the cut as it is now. Unless she's really insisting that you continue. Otherwise just let her experience the cut she has now. If she want to go shorter later, she can. She should have done this in stages gradually instead of cutting it all off.

BTW, why not have her donate that ponytail to Lock of Love or Wigs for Kids, some organization that can make a hairpiece for kids with medical hair loss from cancer chemo treatments or alopecia.

I recently had a similar cut done to my hair and I regret it, most of the time. While it is so much easier to take care of and no time at all to wash, I miss my hair and just thinking about how long it will take to get it back makes gets me teary eyed. However, its just hair and it will eventually grow back. Make absolutely sure that it will look good with her face shape, that she realizes there will be next to nothing she can do with it, especially for dressing up, and that she made a conscious decision to have you cut it and the result it totally on her.

If you don't feel comfortable doing it because you think it is the wrong choice, tell her she has to go to a hair salon to get it done. If she doesn't want to do that, and you wont cut it, then she will be left with her long hair. Tho on the other side, it is her decision to cut her hair. If she wants to have it like that, then she should be able to have it like that. Life is short, after all.

When I want to get my hair cut, I've set up a rule with my friends and anyone who is allowed to cut my hair, (as in, my friends have to stop me if I break this rule), where I must consistently want to cut my hair everyday for one month before I'm allowed to actually act on it. Try seeing if she still wants it awhile later. Tell her she has to tell you at least once everyday for so long, and then and only then will you do it. If you're still uncomfortable with doing it, maybe you should just tell her to get someone else to do it?
Good luck!

Try to persuade her NOT to cut her crowning glory, as she will soon be disappointed.
