E.Coli is a bacterium, not a virus.it is usually found in human intestine and is considered as commensal. It causes diarrhea a and slight nausea when ingested in food.If a person, for example, at a restaurant is not clean,he/she may cause local outbreaks of E.Coli induced food poisoning.Normally it does not happen as it is destroyed by heating up food like practice of cooking.

My honest opinion on this is:
Since there are so many human beings on this planet, we need food. We mass produce food for everyone. Put this into view, you have say 100 people for a 100 acre farm right? thats one person an acre. there is no way that one person can watch every single plant and every single thing that happens on that spot of land.
Another thing is I know this for a fact. One of my family friends used to own a large farm at one time. He grew corn and he had several people working for him. he was out there and he stood there and watched a guy pull off his pants and proceeded to evacuate his bowels in the field. he confronted him about it and he said "but I would have had to have went all the way back across to the bathroom, it was closer" The man pulled up all of his crops and destroyed them.
So, next time you go and get produce, think about it.
