We have to visit her over the holidays and I know she will have something to say about how short my hair is, how much I weigh, how badly I'm treating my husband, how badly I'm raising my kids, etc. I know none of it is really true, but I don't have enough self-esteem to really believe it and ignore her.

Hey, you answered your own question. You have to look at yourself and say, "I'm taking care of my children, my husband and myself the very best that I can If there are improvements to be made, I'll make them. I deserve respect and won't ALLOW anyone to treat me without it." Start talking positively to yourself right now. Life can be difficult enough without having others put us down. Go to WWW.DONTGIVEUP.NET for encouragement and enjoy the holidays and rest of your life!Hope it helps.

your stepmother is not unique, even real mom's do the same thing. rather than let her keep ridiculing you, when she starts, just agree with her - but, then add something in her direction that's negative - for instance, if she says your hair is too short, say you're right it is a little short, but i've been looking at your hair, what did you do with it? it really doesn't look so good on you. get the idea, for everything she says is wrong with you, nicely agree with her, and then turn it back on her. she'll start feeling the way you do when she does it to you - or - she'll know what you are doing, and the fun will be gone from her to want to do it any more. hope it works you - but DON'T let her spoil your Holidays - it's a time for joy - make it just that - be happy and laugh at her.

Well - I would just simoly say " I do not appreciate the words you are using right now - It is unaaceptable for you to talk to me like that" each and every time she talks to you like that and then walk away.

Tell her to shut up!!! Ask her if she's ever heard of the saying, if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all. Speak up. Stand up for yourself. If she says I don't like your hair, tell her that's ok, you don't have to like it.
