How long it hurts varies from person to person.
All you can do is understand completely that it's over forever and you and him will never be together. When you lose all hope of that you will start to recover instead of seeking to fix things.
Also, keep remembering that you'll find many more people even better than him in the long run. I know you don't feel that way, but it's true. Ask anyone older than you. Things get better, so say that to yourself until you believe it.

The length and severity of pain is based on how close you were to the person, and how long you were with them. There are other factors too, but those are the main ones.
Have hope, though, it does get easier. You have to realize that most of the pain is self inflicted. You will be thinking things like "what did I do wrong?" or "what could I have changed?", but understand that we tend to blame ourselves when we are hurt, and dwelling on the thoughts only make them worse. The reality is that sometimes things just don't work out, and it's not anyone's fault.
Try to keep your close friends around you, and don't shut yourself away from people who want to help you feel better. Try to stay positive, it will pass in time.

If you really want to forget him then you have to stop thinking about him. He may not be in your face but you have allowed him to remain at the back of your mind that is why you're suffering that way. As long as our hearts are connected then all efforts to rule over our emotion will mean nothing.
Find happiness in other areas of your life. Whether that means spending time with your friends and family, taking up that class you've always wanted to take, or reading every book on the New York Times bestseller list, remind yourself that there's more to life than being in a relationship. Indulge in those things. As they say, the best revenge is living well.

Try to keep yourself busy. Do things you enjoy. Exercising will make you feel better. Swim, run around the local track, play a fun sports game with friends. Do a hobby or find one. Do sudokus, do crossword puzzles or wordsearches. The more you do, the more you find yourself lying around the house dwelling on the fact you and your boyfriend broke up.

it's not that easy to forget someone who's been with you for along time and I know how you feel. I've been over this situation by relaxing myself. Spending time with your friends and maybe having fun for a while. About three months from then I forgot him. I hope you will too but earlier. Well, I hope you'll do the same because it really helps...

Oh God, I know how you feel. It's horrible and you think you will never heal. But you will, with time. Try and get so busy that you can't think of him so much.
Someone told me it takes about 1/2 as much time to recover from a breakup as the time you were in the relationship.
Hang in there. I promise you will eventually feel better.

well I guess it all depends on how long you guys were together for. And what kind of relationship you had. I dated a girl for about 6 mths and when we broke up I thought I was going to die to. But I eventually realized that she wasn;t really the person for me. It will take a while but the pain will stop.

on to the next! I know that's easier said than done but I was with my last boyfriend for 7 years. I thought I was going to die when it ended but now I am happily married to the most wonderful guy in the world! Keep your head up & get back out there.

HANG IN THERE GIRL. THE DARK CLOUDS WILL SOON DISAPPEAR. MAY I SUGGEST THAT YOU FIND SOMETHING PRODUCTOVE TO KEEP YOUR MIND OCCUPIED SO YOU HAVE LESS TIME TO THINK ABOUT THE PAIN. TAKE UP VIGOROUS EXERCISE AND WEIGHT LIFTING. CHANNELL ALL OF YOUR HURT AND PAIN OUT AS YOU WORK OUT. DEPRESSION IS CAUSED BY ENERTIA WITH MEANS LACK OF MOVEMENT. GET YOUR ENDORPHINS FLOWING BY EXERCISE. IT WORKS AND WILL MAKE YOU FEEL SOO MUCH BETTER. THE HARDEST PART IS GETTING STARTED BUT JUST DO IT! OTHER THAN THAT IT JUST TAKES TIME TO GET OVER THE PAIN. BUT DO NOT GIVE UP, IT WILL HAPPEN AND YOU WILL SMILE ONCE AGAIN.
