That will depend on what Linux distribution you are installing and what RPM packages you choose druing installation. I recently installed xandrOS and it recommends around 3 GB of disk space. I allocated 10 GB for the Linux partition... which is more than enough. It is nothing like the 250+ GB that Windows needs.
Keep in mind that updates and additional RPM's will need space so when setting up your box to install Linux, think ahead a bit.

well it depends on which linux u r installing in genral it takes from 2-5 gb's bt since u'll need space to install linux based softwares make a partition of arnd 10-15gb. n suse10.0 is one of the best linux available.... or if u jst want to try ur hands on linux than u can also use a live cd of knoppix it is 1 cd thru which u can use this os by just playing this disk in ur cdrom... u can also access ur hardisk thru it... so wd ds method u dnt need any space n cn run it thru cdrom n can use some basic applications like audio video player browse inyternet n stuff..

Wow! You got lots of great nothing answers here.
Depending on your distro and the number of features you install (ie. OpenOffice, games etc.) you should look at aprox 7 Gb, then add storage for documents, music and photos. I use Fedora Core 6 and found about 7 Gb was perfect, but you may want to install on a 12Gb partition till you learn how to use it, then go for gold and kill windows.
