Poor baby. I really feel sorry for her. When you take laxatives for such a long time, your body becomes dependent on them to move. Here is what I would advise your friend to do. Get some metamucil which is a NATURAL BULK/FIBER that holds water in your intestines and results in easy passing of stool. It does not contain any stimulants that your body can become dependent on. Take as instructed 3X a day and drink water like crazy! Up your intake of fiberous foods (fruits and veggies) and fruit juices. She might have gas, but that's ok. Your body will adjust. After she get's regulated, she can cut back on the metamucil to twice a day, then once a day. She also needs to add prune juice to her diet and continue with the fluids. God love you for being a good friend. Blessed Holidays to you both.

A nice 3 day or longer fast would help to re-regulate the system and get rid of anything immediately in the colon. Them give the body natural fiber, as was just stated, to keep it regular.

It sounds counter-intuitive, but she needs to up her intake of fiber and get her bowels back used to real fiber from food.
