You should be able to locate them on the Internet.
If you have multiple old bad debts do the following.
1. Contact them one at time, you do not want to have 50 collectors all calling you at the same time.
2. Discuss a settlement, you should be able to do this for 50% or less of the balance, depending how old it is.
3. GET ANY SETTLEMENT YOU AGREE TO IN WRITING!
4. Send them a cashier's check via certified mail.
5. Keep a copy of the settlement agreement and a copy of the check in your permanent records. Many collectors will try to collect again.

You can write a short note with your name and the account number for that company. Explain to them what you are trying to do and give them your phone number and ask that someone get back in contact with you.
Keep in mind that this will NOT erase the negative from your credit report, it will still show up, but it will show up as paid off instead of an amount due. How past due it is will still show up, credit reports usually show payments that were 30 days, 60 days and 90 days late, as well as how many of each there were.
This part is going to sound silly, but depending on how old the account is, paying it off may actually hurt your credit more then helping it. Most credit accounts have a 7 year period that they stay on your report. Anytime that anything is done with that account, starts the 7 years over again. Check the date of the account (will usually say date closed) and see if its something that would be better off leaving alone until it falls off your credit report.

Call the orginal creditor and verify the account balance and where is is placed. More often than not collections companies put their name on your credit report and "forget" to take it off when the account is closed. If you owe XXX and they send it to ABC to collect ABC shows on your report but mostly if they donot collect for a year it goes back to XXX and XXX sends it out to a more aggrisive collection company of DDD. ABC is to remove their name from your report but you would be suprised how often they don't.
Each creditor offer 70-80% of the balance if the debt is old most will accept.

Once you have had a negative credit report it cannot be paid off. You must re-establish good or 'positive' credit by paying your future bills on time.

If you don't have the paper bills that they sent you then just look them up on the internet. You can find their phone numbers pretty easily that way (usually). If not, you'll just have to mail them the payment.

Go to their website, the phone number should be on the site, as well as on billing statements you received from them.
