In Jewish history, there are certain laws and customs that come from different periods. Before the destruction of the Second Temple in Jerusalem by Rome the laws were made by the priests and and judaic law was based around the Temple.

After the destruction of the Temple, leadership and decisions on both law and custom passed to the rabbis, who have retained control since that time. Rules and customs dictated in the last 2000 years are based on "Rabbinic Tradition."
