This cat showed up a few weeks ago and he was clean and friendly. Just a few days ago he showed up again and was dirty, and he has just gotten dirtier. He doesnt seem to be grooming himself, and now is salivating a lot. He feels hot. He is still friendly and still has an appetite, and he's still drinking water.

Something weird is he meows, but no sound comes out. His meows used to be audible, but now it's as if he's on mute.

Call a vet, explain in detail what the cat's symptoms are. Follow his advice. Remember that the only way they can find out for sure if it is rabies, is to kill the cat and and examine the brain. Animal Control will most likely take no chances and put the cat down immediately.
Hopefully, the vet will opt to examine the poor guy to see what else might be the cause. I wouldn't hope for too much in the way of a financial break. I haven't met a vet yet who didn't insist on full payment up front, no matter how dire the situation.

I would call animal control. Maybe it is early stages of rabies, and maybe it is something else, but whatever it is, it has to be serious, if he has a fever and is foaming at the mouth. Animal control can make sure he is taken to a vet, because only a vet can tell for sure what is wrong. This needs to be done ASAP. If animal control can not get there quick enough, then you might consider taking him to the vet yourself, if you can safely get him into a pet taxi. Letting this go for any length of time, could be very dangerous, not only for the cat, but also for nearby people.

Sorry, to say, but this is one time I would call animal control....as fast as possible. Those could be symptoms of rabies (foaming at the mouth/salivating a lot) and even if not, he definitely sounds very sick...... Whatever you do, don't go anywhere near that cat, he could turn aggressive at any minute..... Better to be safe than sorry...

He could have been poisened by someone or something another thing he could have been in a fignt and has an infections. Please get the cat to a shelter or a vet that will help it. In the meantime make him/her a warm box and put old clothes in it. Poor little cat thaat just makes me so sad, I alway feed and help the strays around my place it just breaks my heart to see them suffer in any way, if you can't find a place for it to go, put in a box and put it right in from of a vet's office with note that your sorry but the cat needs help, they usually will help them. Good luck to and the cat, it's nice to know people out in the world care enough about our little creatures to help Good for you.

Take him to the vet but be careful!! Cats do carry diseases if not taken care of and he may only be sick but he did choose you to come to and he is helpless- Hope he is well soon and you will have a best friend for life!

He could be infected w/something serious. If you have your own pets, don't let them near him. It would make sense to take him to a vet who might treat him for free or at a reduced rate. Even if he's not yours, it sounds like he probably is suffering.

Call a vet and explain the situation. Maybe they will treat him for nothing. He sounds like he is very sick and needs medication. Please help him.
