Contrary to what many believe, you do not leave your physical body in your dreams. Dreams are controlled by the subconscious, and therefore, if you can awaken your consciousness in your subconscious state (a process known as "lucid dreaming"), it can be very easy to astrally project. It does take your consciousness to leave your physical body.
