That is a very misunderstood part of scripture- to fear God- if you look at the Hebrew used in those passages, means absolute reverence with respect. In other words- we can't just treat God as our best friend who we can just hang with when we feel like, because we miss the amazing power and holiness that is God. We need to approach Him with that respect, but at the same time remember that He has called us family-so it's respect out of love.Hope that helps.

I'm glad you asked. People often think it means to be afraid of God and yet He calls Himself our Heavenly Father. Unless we are to fear our father, then this doesn't seem to line up....
Excepting in the fact that the fear it's talking about means a healthy respect. For example I could stand at the edge of the ocean and look at all it's vastness and power and beauty and only a fool would not show it a healthy respect and fear to act foolish when it comes to taking it for granted. I may love it and swim in it and fish in it but when a storm approaches I get OUT of it. I fear it's power. To apply that to our understanding of God, it just means, don't be irreverant about God, don't be blaze' about God or glib. He is real, He hears you, and He is all powerful. Like the ocean, there is remarkable strength. only God's strength is all powerful. Show it some respect.
That's what fear of God means.

It's an outdated relic. No longer needed.
The Church has always been very big on dominating its submissive flock.
But you see, the best way to instruct someone is with reason, not with fear... that is why the church is falling apart and is actually a joke in most of Europe--because people now realise they don't need to be afraid of something that doesn't exist.

Same reason a child should fear his parents and especially their dad.
God is the God of all creation and he is worthy of our praise and reverance. Is it really wise to NOT fear and disrespect the God of creation that has control over your spirit?
Its not so much either that God wants us to walk around trembling whether we are going to go to Heaven and hell, but rather more of a respectful worshipful healthy fear that reminds us not to do evil and keep us obediant.

There is only one reason to fear God and that reason was given to us by none other than the Lord Jesus Himself. To the point, fear God for God alone has the power to cast both body and soul into hell. If that doesn't put fear in you, nothing will.

the word fear is to be interpreted "respect". In other words to understand that God has the power to let you walk into heaven or to toss you into the lake of fire. And I suggest to you that it's better to be on God's good side.
Fear=Respect.

Fear of God in the Bible is also known as respect. It's just a translation thing...

God is love.
Hell is being lost and away from God for eternity.
Sin enslaves us and leads to Hell.
Satan wants us to sin in hopes that we will become enslaved to sin and lost in Hell for eternity. Satan also despises us because he thinks that he is far superior to us mortals. That's why he refused to serve God because God revealed to Lucifer (Satan) that he was to humble Himself and become human in order to save us. Satan didn't like that, so he decided to rebel against God. Then the archangel Michael rose up and said "who is like unto God?" Then the war in Heaven began between the good angels and the bad ones. Then Michael and his angels prevailed. Then God cast down Satan and his angels (demons), and they fell like a bolt of lightening from Heaven.
People who go to Hell go there because they freely choose in this life to reject God. As I said before, Hell is being banished from the presence of God. God doesn't send anyone to Hell, people who go there send themselves to Hell.
A healthy "fear" of God is not like fear that someone has for someone who is mean. It is more like when you have an awesome father whom you love very much and you fear disappointing him because you love him that much. That is what is meant by having a "fear of the Lord".
