if you go to QD they sell some 'stay off' pellets which work really well. Or soak some cotton woll balls with 'olbas oil' which you can get from any chemist or supermarket and place those on top of the soil. Or smear some vicks vaporub around the rim of the plant pots. Or for a really nice look, buy some glass pebbles and put a thick layer on top of the soil. This will not only keep the cats off, but keep the humidity in the pot too and looks really nice. However if the plants have been pooped in, you need to repot the plants first as the smell will linger and the urine may cause the plants to die.
My daughter in law had the same problem with her 2 kittens. She repotted and used the 'stay off' pellets. If my cats did the same, I would repot, use glass pebbles and possible the vicks method too.

Give orange peels a try they apparently hate citrus. One thing i've done was get river rocks and I placed them on the top of the soil so the cats couldn't dig up the dirt. River rocks are just smooth round or oval shaped rocks and they really helped. I had taken in a bunch of shelter cats that were going to be put down so until I could find them homes I had to retrain them and one just wouldn't leave my soil alone in the plant boxes so this is what I did after trying every other trick I could think of, they really look goos as well and people thought I did it for decorating, so maybe try that. It's usually the dirt they want. Also clean out your litter box twice daily your cat may not like to use a dirty box. Some cats are really fussy about that. Good lucki

I presume that it's a fairly large plant? If so, put LOOSE kitchen foil around the stem, making sure that you've covered the soil completely. Cats hate atepping on it! You would also be well advised to remove as much of the soil as you can without disturbing the plant's roots, and replace with fresh soil or compost, so that the scent that would attract the cat back to the place is eliminated to the highest possible degree. If the plant is stood on the carpet or floor, wash the area surrounding it as thoroughly as you can for the same reason. Good luck!

At the pet store in the aquarium section, you can get large "river rocks" (about 2-3 inches across, polished smooth - about the size of a golf ball if you smashed it nearly flat). Place these on top of the dirt so the kitten can't dig into the soil, and that should hopefully be enough deterrent.
The water can still get through to the plant when you water it.

Put down a layer of big (quarter, to 50 cent sized) river rock... they sell it in the garden department... a small cat can't move the rocks to get to the dirt... I have also sprinkled the dirt with red pepper flakes... this method only seemed to work for a short while.

Put large pebbles in the pots on top of the soil. You'll still be able to water the plants but the cat won't be able to poop in them.
Try changing your cat litter as well. Cats can be fussy. Mine only like the clay based litter.

Usually cats hate orange peels and lemon smell so if you eat an orange put it in the pot of your plant and shell smell it and go away it worked for most of my cats if that dosent work you could also use a spray bottle full of water and when you cach her going potty say no and squirt the bottle at her and put her in a litterbox

an immediate soluton could be to remove plants from the area and add soil to the cat litter. Gradually use less soil until the kit kit uses the tray freely without going to plants

Put aluminum foil around the base to cover the dirt. Cats hate stepping on it, but make sure it is not pressed down. You want it to cave in a little as the cat steps on it. They are programed to poop in dirt.

Dilute bleach and water, 25 bleach-75 water. Spray the base and no cat will go near it. It won't hurt the plant either. This also works great outdoors. Go 50-50 there.
