I live in a busy apartment, lots of people come in and out-the cats seem to sense when my brother is coming, right before he enters-they hear other people come in and out, they dont react to them-is it due to sense of smell?

I am a teacher. My cat knows exactly when I am going to wake up and sits on my chest a few minutes before my alarm goes off. This is all well and good... except she does it on weekends and in the summer too. Daylight savings also takes her a bit to get used to. Needless to say, she definitely has a sense of time. However, she also knows both my husband's and my "getting home" sounds. I've seen her ignore certain cars that pull up in the driveway and run to the door when it's his.

My boyfriend tells me my cat does the same thing. We live in an apartment and when I come home he sits by the front door. I don't believe cats have a sense of time persay - but they do know routine. If your brother comes home from work at a certain time of the day he probably knows the "time" your brother comes home. There's probably something giving your cat a clue that it's him. If your cat sits in front of the door right before your brother walks up to it he probably does smell him - by then his scent has come through the cracks of the door. Or maybe it's the sound of his car pulling in or locking up, the sound of his shoes up the stairs, the way he walks on the floor, or the way his pace slows as he comes to the door. Or maybe they have the sixth sense and just know. It's a mystery.

All I know is, we used to have a Sphinx cat that definitely knew when I was coming home. My wife would say he would wait at the door several minutes before I would typically arrive home from work, and he knew my routine of going into the bedroom and putting down my keys and wallet on the dresser. As soon as I'd come home, he'd run into the bedroom, and wait for me to do my thing, and then expect, no more like demand, that I pet him for 10 minutes or so. Then we both could go about the rest of our evening. Maybe all cats don't tell time, but this one sure did.

Cats have a great sense of hearing as well of routine. Even if you break that routine they can tell your footsteps from hundreds in that building. When my husband was dating me and would stop by my apt on his way home from work during the busiest traffic time on my street, my cats jumped off the couch and run to the door before he turned the corner of my street 2 blocks away! They knew his car signature and heard him on the main road several blocks away. It was amazing! Sure enough, 3 minutes later, he was parking in my empty space in front of the building, his old car had a light click-click engine sound and they were going crazy by the door. I never heard the car until he drove up!

They have a very good sense of routine, so I guess that's also a sense of time.

They also have excellent hearing. My cat would come running when he heard my car. When the car was in the shop and I was using a rental it would really mess him up. I'm sure they can recognize your brother's footsteps as he approaches the apartment.

Yes, I think they have a sense of time. Everyday when I get home from work, my cat is waiting right at the door for me.

My cats seem to know when I am coming home, even if I have just gone to the store or something. They are usually waiting at the door, or sitting in the window when I come home.

Cats are very special in the nature and if you have a set pattern then they will have that in understanding too and will literally look for you!I have a cat here that we call cat/ dog she will follow me everywhere and knows when my car is coming up the drive before my kids do!

Yes, yes, yes! My cats line up in the front window waiting for me to come home each night. It screws them up if I'm late. My wife gets a bang out of this, as they wait for my truck to pull in the driveway. She claims about an hour before they wander around like there getting ready for their highlite of the day. She also claims she could almost set her watch with them. Smart critters. eh!

I think they can also sense the energy coming from your brother-he's probably thinking about the apartment, etc as he walks up. They pick up on that vibe.
