I wouldn't think so, however they might know how to take care of them a little better at a gun shop. Things like wiping them down after handing them and what not.

The Remington 770 is actually the bottom of the barrel for the budget bolt-actions that are currently on the market. Savage Axis Marlin X7 Series (I own an XL7 in .30-06, solid rifle) Ruger American I beleive there are others, and the Remington 770 seems to be OK, but I still think it is of lesser quality than the rifles I just listed. I don't know if it's true, but I heard rumors that a few people have had catastrophic failures due to faulty manufacturing, but I don't know if there is any truth to this. Also, of the 3 others I mentioned, the Savage is of the lowest quality, but will get the job done and generally will come with a scope for the same price as the others without an optic. The Ruger American And Marlin X7 rifles are just about top of the line for the price-point, so I'd go with one of them. I also hear that you can grab a Weatherby Vanguard for just over $600, so it would be a step under a Remington 700 for example, but a step above the others. Even with the Weatherby, I've heard some negative criticisms as well as some scary stuff. You may want to look into that a bit more if you go the Weatherby Vanguard or Remington 770 route. Hope that helped!

No, but the models they carry are generally of lessor quality. A gun shop will probably have them too, but also better models as well. Any gun though will be about the same as any other gun in that model. Be careful of those Remington 710s though. They are generally not really high quality. Some work fine, but there are many that have been sent back for repairs. You can get a Savage Steven's 200 for about the same price, it might not come with a scope, but that's a pretty crappy scope on the 710's anyway. The 200's will shoot as good as about anything and if they don't look fancy but are capable of outshooting some guns twice or three times the price.

No,a Remington is a Remington quality wise. The gun shop should have a more knowledegeable staff to answer your questions and provide warranty service if needed. Most gunshops don't try to sell the same model variants as Walmart so as not to compete in price, but, offerservice and experience.

No! But it's probably nicer to do business with a actual gun dealer beings the folks at Wal-mart don't know a whole lot about firearms and it's difficult to impossible to custom order. I also would recommend staying away from the Remington Model 710.

I've had the misfortune of working for Wal-Mart in the sporting goods department. The quality is the same, but as someone said earlier, they do next to nothing to support hunters/gun owners as far as legislative efforts. In fact, Wal-Mart internally admits that the only reason they have firearms is to "draw-in" hunters during hunting season. Wal-Mart really doesn't care if it ever sells a rifle. They mainly like the display. They make their money on the accessories. Plus, the only training that the staff has is either from their own experience with firearms (which depending on the employee, can either be good or bad) and a 20 minute computer based learning program that covers the basics of how a weapon works. If you have any questions about what type of rifle you need/want, you're definately typically better off going to a gun shop. Even when I worked there, I always made it a point to buy my weapons from a local gun dealer who supported our right to bear arms. It's true that its impossible to custom order a firearm from Wal-Mart. They have a Wal-Mart catalog on what they'll order and that's it. And in Texas, the law states that when you fill out the Federal 4473, there are three possible responses. "Denied" which means you CAN NOT sell the firearm to the customer, "Approved" which means its okay, or "Delayed" which means they need to review it. Legally, the government says that if you haven't gotten any response within three days, you can sell the firearm under the assumption that it's an "Approved" and be fine. Wal-Mart, being a paranoid mass of "write their own rules" refuses to sell a firearm until they get an an "approved." They used to sell pistols as well as rifles/shotguns, but got the idea that anyone with a pistol must be a criminal, so they stopped selling them.

That's all relevant to how you're using your gun. If it's hunting, the Remington 700 guns are sufficient (available at Walmart), if you're long range precision shooting, you're going to want to go with a 700 Police Rifle (LE), which I don't believe they have available there. But like those have said before, Remington is not going to produce a lesser quality gun just to sell at Walmart; they are a big name...I don't think they'd risk that.

The guns at Walmart and any other department store are the same as you would buy at a gun shop.Walmart has so many stores that they can buy in quanity and save alot of money. This helps when you go buy a gun because of the cost savings to you. Most Walmart stores will special order any gun you want if they don't have what you are looking for.
